If I submit 6 share GTC and only 4 get matched as takers, are the remaining 2 allowed to rest? Or are they cancelled bc < 5 ?

I always post GTC orders, sometimes less than 5 shares. Sometimes the <5 share orders are successful, and sometimes I get an error like 'order size must be at least >= 5 shares'. Anyone know why/when this happens?
