I don't know to what extent this guy was exaggerating, but Mark Halperin had an NRSC guy on his show in I think early May, and the guy said that the Oppo they had on Platner was so bad, that not only would he lose the election, he'd have to leave the state.

I 95% agree with this assessment. They got scared by the skeletons in his closet probably around May. They didn't want Janet Mills. So they orchestrated a post-primary withdrawal to not get stuck with a fatally damaged candidate or a suboptimal runner up

You know there are also other stories that are probably being held back just in case he decides he's one of those men who just want to watch the world burn. IMHO this type of story was the "minimum" seriousness needed to force a withdrawal, but there are almost certainly others that are more nuclear that they'll deploy if they have to.
